       By the time you've finished reading through this site you will not only know what's making you tired, but how to rid yourself of tiredness as well.  Most people who always feel tired could be completely free if they only knew how to properly manipulate the life factors that are affecting them the most.  Usually, the main culprits are some combination of...

  • Stress level
  • Physical activity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Mental demand and activity
  • Diet
  • Sleep habits (and no, this doesn't just mean "sleep more")

1)  Sleep Habits:
  When most people relate sleep habits to tiredness, they instantly think that they just need more sleep to get more energy.  While it does make sense, sleeping longer hours is a crucial mistake that actually can you MORE tired than before.  This is due to the fact that the human body rests in cycles of 90 minutes.  In this timeframe, you will progress through all 5 stages of sleep in order to recharge your body, and at the end of 90 minutes a new cycle begins. 

       Many people you'll talk to will recommend 8 or even 10 hours of sleep per night, but the problem is that these amounts are NOT evenly divisible by 1.5 hours (90 minutes) meaning that sleeping for 8 or 10 hours will make your body wake up in the MIDDLE of a sleep cycle.  Your body is not a fan of this and will release chemicals (serotonin and melatonin) in the brain that will make you feel tired all day long in an attempt at getting you to lie down and complete that sleep cycle.  The problem with simply recommending sleep amounts like 6, 7.5, or 9 hours (which are divisible by 1.5) is that each person's sleep cycle is slightly different and therefore optimum sleep times vary (don't worry though, further down the page Step 2 is going to help cover this).


2) Physical Activity:  Physical activity and exercise is something that is often left out when our lives get so busy and hectic.  However, exercise is key because your physical activity level controls the release of endorphins in the brain, chemical compounds responsible for giving you a more awake and happy state of mind.

       Exercise is also important because your body budgets energy based on perceived need.  If you're never active and don't expend much physical energy, your body won't stock up as well and you'll find that you burn out quickly (whereas an active person's body will anticipate needing lots of energy).

3)  Eating Schedule:  The human body metabolizes most food in a period of 3-4 hours, meaning that in that timeframe the fuel from your previous meal is all burned up.  It's silly then, that our normal eating schedule usually involved a 5, 6, or even 7+ hours gap between lunch and dinner.  Many studies have shown that eating smaller meals more often so that your calorie intake is better spread out is the way to go.  But (as always) there's a catch:  Certain types of foods metabolize at different rates and provide different amounts of energy.  Knowing what these foods are and how to distribute them is also discussed in the solutions put forth in Step 2.  Read on!
