3 Reasons You Might Be Exhausted

Dear Tiredness Sufferer,

Constant tiredness and fatigue can be overwhelming and have numerous adverse effects on one's life, yet the conventional knowledge regarding what makes us tired is really just the tip of the iceberg.  In this article, we're going to go over 3 not-so-well-known tiredness causes that might be sapping your energy on a daily basis.

1)  First of all, let's talk about light exposure.  Most people intuitively know that sleeping in the dark is easier than falling asleep in broad daylight, but most people don't know why this is and, more importantly, how artificial lighting might be messing with your sleep schedule and energy level.

When our eyes signal the brain that light levels are dropping, our brain begins to secrete a drowsiness inducing neurotransmitter known as "melatonin".  Melatonin release is inhibited and blocked when the body doesn't think it's time to sleep, and many of us make it harder to fall asleep by staring at TV or computer screens close to bed time.  Since melatonin is released over a period of 20-40 minutes, staring at an artificially lit screen right before you want to fall asleep will set you back.

2) Stress and mood also play a big a large role in constant tiredness and insomnia.  The body recuperates and rests best when your mind, both consciously and subconsciously, can be dedicated to your reparations and not to daily stresses or worries.  Try to clear your mind before bed and fall asleep with a relaxed demeanor.  Many people find breathing and relaxation exercises to be helpful in clearing your mental palette for a restful night's sleep.

3)  Using an alarm clock can also be a tiredness instigator.  The biggest problem with alarm clocks is that they induce unnatural waking.  The body is set to sleep and wake on preset cycles in which it progresses through all 5 stages of sleep.  Interrupting your body in the middle of one of these cycles can be a big problem and many people find that even if they've slept a decent amount of time, actually feeling rested throughout the day is hit or miss because only sometimes does your alarm clock waking time correspond correctly with when your body wants to start it's day.
